| Xinjiang, located in the northwest of China, is geopolitically significant. In theWestern Han Dynasty, the central government established the Protectorate of theWestern Regions to manage and control this region. Since then, Xinjiang has beenunder the influence and control of the central government. By the mid-19th century,the Western powers began to encroach upon Qing China along its frontier, andXinjiang was one of the targets. From then on, international intervention has becamean important factor that influencing Xinjiang’s stability and development. This couldbe seen in the rising of Xinjiang separatist activities, the international support forXinjiang separatists when they fled aboard after the Peaceful Liberation of Xinjiang inSept.1949, and the revival of Xinjiang separatist activities after the Cold War. Andamong all the international powers involving in Xinjiang problems, the United Stateshas gradually became the biggest one. After the Cold War, the United States has paidincreasingly more attention on Xinjiang problems. The US Congress has becameinterested in Xinjiang problems and exerted influence on it. Meanwhile, some NGOsin America continually provide financial and other support to Xinjiang separatists.Generally, the US government regards Xinjiang problems as a human rights issue.After Barack Obama took office in2009, the US government has embarked on itsprogress of returning to Asia, which would inevitably impact China-US relations.What role would the US play in Xinjiang problems and what consequences it mayhave are well worth thinking. |
