A revolutionary historical novel refers to a literature work that usually relates the origin of a "revolution" led by the CPC, and the tortuous process before the final victory of the "revolution", the characters of which include "within a given in ideological limit, and relate a given historical theme, in order to achieve a given purpose in ideology".The most important works include "Snowy Forest", "Railway Guerrillas", "Red Flag" and so on. In these literature works, which have a "given" in nature, relate closely to the era, and conduct strongly in political propaganda, many female images came on stage with the marks of the times. Except for the those female images similar to the so-called "angel" and "devil" types in western feminist theory, it is worth noting that a large number of "sexless" female images appeared in these revolutionary historical novels, which differ greatly from female images in either traditional Chinese novels or western feminist theory. These images include the "iron ladies" who have little differences from men, and the ones are similar to neither "angel" nor "devil", but to the sexless "Gaia" in traditional Chinese fairy tales. Once came on stage, these two types of sexless female images, which are totally different from images in traditional Chinese novels or western feminist theory, soon became popular, and formed the formulaic and conceptualized female images in revolutionary historical novels. To find out its cause, first, the "revolutionary historical" themes are significantly important in both literature history and political reality, the "essence" of history must be represented, so as to demonstrate the truthfulness of the new society and new regime, and in specific means to promote the legalization of the given representation of history, and provide the masses with ideological standard in life and thoughts. These sexless female images, which differ far away from the ones in traditional Chinese novels or western feminist theory, are in accordance with the women policy promoted by the new government in new society, as well as the development of the writers’ aesthetics to the female images since "May the Fourth Movement", as a result, appearance of such images are appreciated and encouraged by the new government. The appearance of these female images vividly presented the female policy promoted by the new government, and could educate the masses, help them understand the female liberation movement after the founding of the new government, so as to strongly advocate and popularize the new policy. Although such “sexless ”images are greatly different from either traditional Chinese novels or western feminist theory, and to some extent, the appearance of such formulaic and conceptualized female images weakened the aesthetic value of the novel and the character, however, they helped to popularize the opinions such as "gender equality", and helped the development of women’s liberation movement, as well as the realization of “payment equality”. The appearance of these female images can not be simply evaluated as damage to literariness of novels, the deep meaning and positive role should be considered. The mark of an era on literature cannot be avoided, besides historical limitations, we should analyze the novels rationally and give an objective and fair assessment. Of course, there are various reasons for this phenomenon, and this essay is an attempt to study the performance of the the formalism and conceptualization of the female images,as well as the deep reasons of such phenomenon.
