| Xu Qiping, a well-known theater educationalist and director, was active in the 1980s.His two most famous productions which are both Shakespeare’s works, Titus Andronicus and Romeo and Juliet, represent his highest achievement in theater. This phenomenon is not only a coincidence, but also determined by the director’s aesthetic tendency, idea of art and world view. As the same time, Xu held on the eclectic principle when creating and teaching. Based on the Stanislavsky system, he carried on the innovation then made his performances brand-new, and his ways of directing, theatrical perception and aesthetic philosophy are still meaningful to the theatricians these days. According to the video materials of the performances and the two directing plans, this thesis studies on the art of Xu Qiping’s Shakespearean plays and discusses their time significance, starts with Xu’s particular art methods and gets theoretical supports from the structural semiotic and studies of acting and directing. |
