Ethical Reflection On "One Night Stand"

In recently years, one-night stand has attracted attention from researchers because it is a type of happiness purely based on sex. This challenges the traditional ethical value of China that is based on love. The behavior of one-night stand represents a trend of non-affectional love, violating the traditional sexually ethical value. Nonetheless, it does not mean that purely sexual happiness without focusing on love is unethical and unacceptable. It is also a question whether the one-night stand based on equality, voluntary willingness and non-harm is controlled by laws, and how to control the sexual behavior using legal and ethical methods. Furthermore, the sexual freedom and sexual right held by the western society may be just an excuse for the birth of one-night stand, but not a cause of it. There is a difficulty in choose to obey or discard traditional sexual ethical value, and making the traditional Chinese sexual value appropriate to the development of society.Such a series of problems and contradictions make us find no basis to ethically judge the behavior of one-night stand, posing a difficulty in researching one-night stand. This dissertation attempts to review the argument on sexual rights and freedom, and solve the problems underlying in sexual ethical value and legal control. Also, it identifies the positive and negative components of the traditional Chinese sexual ethical value, and adopts the positive parts, thus examining the real causes of one-night stand behavior. The main causes include the introduction of the western sexual ethical value and the lack of sex education. Also, the development of modern technologies increases opportunities of one-night stand for people. Furthermore, although different people hold different ethical criteria, the lack of sex education makes people difficult to consider whether it is scientific to hold these criteria.Although the researchers supporting the one-night stand usually emphasis the appropriateness of one-night stand and consider it as a basic sexual right and freedom, they still fail to see the unethical aspects of one-night stand. Based on interviews and review of first-hand written materials, the negative aspects and harm of one-night stand are identified, and the unethicality is summarized. Specifically, it helps the transmission of the sexually transmitted disease and even HIV virus, damage to the family happiness and instability of society, and violation to the basic sexual ethical value. Therefore, avoiding discussing one-night stand will increase the spread of this behavior. In this dissertation, a series of measures to deal with one-night stand are proposed. Firstly, emotional relationship should be consolidated using various methods, reducing the opportunities of extramarital relation. Secondly, emphasis should be placed on sexual education in families, schools and the society, helping people aware of the unethicality of one-night stand. Additionally, scientific sexual behavior value should be set up among people, which requires people to have control over their sexual behavior and awareness, thus avoiding one-night stand through self-control.
