As a introduced foreign word, great changes has taken place in the connotation and donation of PATTERN. In different fields of modern design, pattern, graphics, pictures and painting have crossing, overlapping and collocation in certain extent.At the beginning of introduction, PATTERN refers to a technology that draw a pattern on an item which refers to the shape, appearance and color adapted to it when making basic necessities in daily life. This technology contains the essence of beauty, utility, shape, appearance and color. However, the original conception of PATTERN is replaced by “arts” and “design” in development, which extends PATTERN to more “flat decorative pattern” category. AS a branch or category of PATTERN, textile pattern has its particularity besides common characters. First of all, this paper define the noumenon of PATTERN and tease out the similar confusing decorative pattern concepts by clarifying the difference between PATTERN and decorative pattern in both level and category, as well as analyzing the relationship of pattern, graphics, pictures and painting in theory based on a large number of related literature reading. Secondly, in accordance with the historical development of textile design in the 19 th century to the 20 th century, this paper discusses the textile pattern’s law of development, change characteristics and its interactional relationship with visual arts from aspects of elements, structure and performance. Thirdly, from aspect of cross-boundary reference cases, this paper analyzes the inner links, creative performance and utilization difference of different visual arts, discusses the painting, graphic design, innovation of the folk craft, element USES and schema structure’s inspiration on modern textile pattern design in digital network age. In brief, the paper attempts to apply to cross-boundary and cross-disciplinary method to bring some new ideas and reference ways both in theoretical and practical levels.
