The sixth-generation directors have a style of their own and display unique aesthetic characteristics in ways they make films, aesthetic style and cultural attitudes. They focus on low-social-status figures, which is the obvious aesthetic pursuit. Different from soul-stirring hero lore and shocked life and death contest, the low-social-status figures display essential power and survival wisdom in ordinary life, animate passion in hardship life or miserable circumstances and show thrilling power of tragic art.This paper takes low-social-status figures in the films of sixth-generation directors as research object, combines tragedy theory research with case analysis to classify the low-social-status figures, discusses their tragedy creation, tragic conflict and tragic condition, and explores the ultimate life questions of directors by displaying the tragedy of low-social-status figures.This paper includes introduction, main body and conclusion.The introduction states current research condition of sixth-generation directors, topic selection and innovation.The main body has four parts:The first part briefly narrates Chinese and western tragic concepts and defines the tragedy, and meanwhile, it summarizes the films of sixth-generation directors, selects many low-social-status figures, divides such figures into three categories in view of tragedy, to wit: youth group who suffer from pains during their growth, people living at the bottom of society who survive the tough times and gray crowd wandering urban fringes, and combines the films to analyze tragic meanings of low-social-status figures.The second part states the tragic conflicts of low-social-status figures, which means conflicts of human and nature, human and society and human and human. Those conflicts are intertwined, developed and changed to continuously create new survival predicament to low-social-status figures.The third part explores how the film language creates tragic condition. The recording full-length shots truly present the survival environment of low-social-status figures; the collaged montages truly return to the inner experience of low-social-status figures:in addition, the combination of dialect dialogue, synchronization recording, pop music, cool pictures and ungifted figures creates unique artistic atmosphere to present tragic life of low-social-status figures.The fourth part states resistance consciousness and reality accountability of directors and explores the ultimate life questions of directors by displaying the tragedy of low-social-status figures. At beginning of creation, the low-social-status figures in the films reflect the own experience of the directors, while they have a perspective into the society and keep a watchful eye on the survival circumstances of ordinary people with the enriching of creative experience.The conclusion part reflects current film development, and the author expects the current films to learn the advantages of tragedy and develop better.
