Studies on business letter language make for the promotion and development of trade communication. Likewise, the use of linguistic hedge in business letters is a common phenomenon. Based on studies on linguistic hedge by domestic and foreign scholars, this article makes a brief introduction of linguistic hedge from the point view of definition and classification. Quantitative and qualitative analyzing methods are adopted to give an account of fifty domestic and foreign business letters with the help of Grice‘s cooperation principles and Leech‘s politeness principles to reach the conclusion for the main reasons of linguistic hedge in business letters. The final conclusion confirms that not only linguistic hedge is permitted to use, but also linguistic hedge features are dependent to show the clear definition and conciseness, along with different pragmatic function of linguistic hedge of business letters in different situations. This article does favor to the studies on linguistic hedge in Chinese.
