A Study Of Gong Shitai And His "Zhai Zhai"

Gong Shitai was a famous writer and politician in the late Yuan Dynasty. He inherited the culture of his family and was under the tutelage of Wu Cheng, then enrolled in the official school.During that period,he won many appreciation by other outstanding scholars.He created lots of works, but many of them were missing.Only one of the pieces was handed down at last.it was the Collection of Wanzhai which included many literature styles such as poem、Fu、Ji、preface、stone tablet、epigraph、argumentation, etc. It indicated the literary achievement of Gong Shitai. This paper intends to make a detailed analysis and research on the origin and characteristics of the thought of Gong Shitai and the content and artistic achievement of the Collection of Wanzhai.The first chapter is the introduction, which summarizes the general situation of Gong Shitai and his book Collection of Wanzhai. In this part,the value and significance of the research as well as the current situation of the study of Gong Shitai and his book Collection of Wanzhai is explained clearly. What is more,some shortcomings are also pointed out.The second chapter studies the origin of the literature thought of Gong Shitai from four parts:the Yuan Dynasty’s culture, his family culture,his teachers and friends and his life experience. Besides, the thought characteristic is also analyzed in this chapter.The third chapter mainly analyzes the content and artistic features of the prose of Collection of Wanzhai. The styles and themes of the prose are variety, then the article divides them into five parts:preface、postscript、stone tablet、Ji prose and other styles. On this base,the article summarizes the artistic features of the prose: combining the Wen and Dao harmoniously;passionate but rational;clear and detailed.The fourth chapter is mainly focus on the analysis of the content and artistic features of the poetry. His poetry is manifold both in genre and content. The poetry will be classified into four patterns: Tizuo Yongwu poems, farewell poems, traveling poems, responding and presenting poems. The features of the poetry are described astender and gentle;forceful and grand; peaceful and secluded.
