| In this thesis, by tracing the use of paper material and studying on the way of creation which use paper as medium, we discuss the experimental application of paper in contemporary paintings.First we trace the origin of paper using in the painting history, in order to understand how paper influence the development of painting. We discuss paper cutting from the perspective of two-dimensional creation, taking Ku Shulan, the Chinese traditional paper cutting artist and Henri Matisse, a western modern artist as two examples. Talking about Paper cutting which transforms from two-dimensional creations to three-dimensions, we take the work of Peter Callesen, a Denmark contemporary artist, and Calvin Nicholls, a Canadian paper sculptor as well as that of Tomoko Shioyasu, a Japanese female artist as examples. Furthermore, we discuss how to convey in the way of creation by combining the traditional paper medium and painting. We take the work of Kiki Smith, a Germany artist and of Jockum Nordstrom, a Sweden contemporary artist as examples, to investigate how contemporary painting artists enrich the individual painting language by virtue of paper material. In all, as the major medium, paper brings plenty of new creative methods and possibilities to artists. Paper no longer only plays a traditional role of two-dimensional medium. In the context of contemporary art, it has a lot of new forms. There is still a plenty possibility to investigate for the work of paper in contemporary art. It becomes a new driving force. At the end of the thesis, the work of graduation will be introduced to provide support for this thesis. |
