As we are photographers in the new century, how should we read and understand photography? Viewing photographs from different aspects can deepen our understanding of photography and allow us to consider all the debates we have had about the definition of photography since it’s existence. With photography’s peak in the 20 th century, most photographers had their own unique insight and many answers to photography’s questions were answered.This essay aims to combine various theories and showcase multiple angles to read photography. Modern art theory is employed to discuss what is photography; how do we react when we see a photo; and the relationship between photo and viewer, photo and world. This essay also addresses some heated topics in the history of photography, of which most are based on photography’s functionality, which includes photography and painting, black and white photography, female photography etc. At the end the different criteria toward photo in museums, academies and communities also are addressed.This paper allows viewers to explore photo through different angels, to provoke their thoughts to photography comprehensively, and form their own unique ideas.
