Tchaikovsky is one of the greatest composer and music educator in Russia, has been hailed as a great master of music in 19 th century. Tchaikovsky’s piano works are more than one hundred, and almost half of the work is solo piece when he taught in Moscow conservatory of music(1866-1878) which is the productive period after he graduated from the school. Themes and variations in F major was the work of this period.Theme and variations in F major, consist of 12 variations, and a coda with characteristics of variation. The Paper is focus on the theme of the characteristics and variation types which are analyzed, and sums up the music vocabulary, to understand the characteristics and development trend of variation’s creation at that time. At the end, with detailed theoretical analysis to guide the work of the play.
