As a prominent representative of oversea Chinese writers in recent years, Zhang Ling’s writing has attracted more and more attention among researchers. Zhang Ling began writing after late 1990s. In less than twenty years, she produced many excellent works. Writing in a different culture, Zhang Ling observed the exotic life in a broad cultural vision, and looked back at the homeland and its history. Zhang Ling’s works are unique in both their themes and expressions. Studying on Zhang Ling’s works completely not only help us explore what is in her mind when she was writing, but also enlighten us how to evaluate other similar writers. This paper tries to study Zhang Ling’s new immigration novel from the perspective of "exile and return", and resort the characteristics of her writing in this new angle. In this paper, I first identify Zhang Ling as one of the new generation of immigrant writers in North America, and then analysis her works from three separate aspects:the "retrial" narrative of banishing, the regressive position of writing, and the transcendence and limitations of her novels. Therefore, this paper is divided into four parts:The first chapter is a summarization of Zhang Ling’s life and related studies. I will resort by timeline the development of Chinese literature in North America, and identify Zhang Ling as one of the new immigrant writers in North American. The second chapter discusses Zhang Ling’s contribution to New Immigrants Novels in North American from the context of her novels-reveals as the "retrial" narrative of banishing. This chapter mainly analyzes her narrative style from the temporal-and spatial-interlaced storyline, "native" and "foreign" narrative viewpoint, and the historical reconstruction of background; analyzes her observations of immigrants and her viewpoint of culture from her portraits of the female immigration images and r "redeemer" (pastor) images; and analyzes her grasp of the "pursuing" spirit of immigrants from the men and women she portraits on the road searching for their spiritual home. The third chapter focuses on Zhang Ling’s expression in a "return" gesture. In her novel, Zhang Ling used a large number of elements related with her maternal culture, such as the Chinese house in a foreign land, traditional Chinese language, etc. At the same time, Zhang Ling focused on history of Chinese immigrants, and how the destiny of land affects the destiny of individuals, which is a result of her deep excavation on the national history and rational attitude of positive reflection. The fourth chapter is an evaluation of transcend and limitation of Zhang Ling’s work. At the same time, by inspecting the "alleged plagiarism" event, I will discuss original issues among oversea authors.
