The present paper is a thesis for Master’s degree, and it is a treatise of the poetry by Dulaan, a Mongolian scholar and poet. Up until now, Dulaan has published over 200 poems and 5 poem collections titled A Collection of Poems by Ulaantuya, Qi Dalai, Dulaan and Na. Huhshugui, The Mongolian, The Wet Moon, The Amber-eyed Girl, and The Auspicious Colt.Through an observation of the themes and contents of Dulaan’s poems, and the paper proposes a classification of Dulaan’s poetry into four major themes, namely nostalgia and motherhood, historical and cultural retrospection, love, and world of fairy tales. These themes present themselves in chronological orders, and each theme period presents its own distinguished thoughts, means of artistic expression, and emotional changes. The present paper conducts a systematic and comprehensive study to the contents, thoughts, means of expression, and emotional expressions of the four major themes, with an approach of textual studies and comparative studies, and a combination of materials from the interviews with Dulaan and the manuscripts of his poems. It is composed of four parts, which are introduction, the main body of four chapters, the conclusion and the appendix. The introduction states the reason and significance of the present study, and introduces the literature, the major approach and the materials of the study. Chapter One discusses Dulaan’s search of his self-identity through nostalgia and motherhood, and it can be divided into two parts:the integration of nostalgia and motherhood as an emotional spring, and the search of self-identity. This chapter centers on the poets around the year 1987.Chapter Two centers on the theme of historical and cultural retrospection, and it mainly centers on the poem collection of The Mongolian. Through an analysis of the historical poems, it probes into the unification of the historical retrospection and modern awareness, and shows how the poet expresses this unification through contrasts and conflicts. The paper conducts a systematic comparison between The Mongolian by Dulaan and The 96 Types of Moons by the Taiwan poet Qinsong, and shows that the former shows a direct formal influence from the latter, and but transcends it in both theme and content. Historical and cultural themes accord with the second stage starting from the year 1989, and display a more complicatedchallenge and novelty.Chapter Three mainly discusses the love poems of Dulaan, centering on the two collections of The Wet Moon and The Amber-eyed Girl. It analyses the forms and structure, the means of expression andthe artistic style of these poems, with theoretical framework of folk literature and the of dramatic plot development. Love poems are a significant part of the second stage, and the major part of the third stage of Dulaan’s poem composition.Chapter Four studiesthe theme of the world of fairytales of Dulaan’s poetry, which is again divided into two parts:children’s thinking and Dulaan’s thought, and folk tales and Dulaan’s poems, with a summary of the features of these poems through a study of the poem collection The Auspicious Colt.lt conducts a cross-style comparison to the folk tale of Harmonious Four Animals and Dulaan’s narrative poem with the same title, as well asa specific study on another child poem A Eulogy of Nahiya with perspective of epic studies. A presentation of children’s world is an important part of the third stage of Dulaan’s composition. The conclusion includes a summary of the main points and ideas of the paper, and a review of the influence and contribution of Dulaan’s poetry on contemporary Mongolian poetry.
