Charles Ives is the pioneer in the field of modern music composition in the20thcentury.After constantly grope and creation, He broke a new path of music compositionwhich is full of American feature,thus making incredible influence on the developmentof American professional music composition. This article tries to conclude the technicalcharacteristics on the use of instruments of Ives’s orchestral works according to theanalysis of “Charles Ives Symphony No.4”, Ives’s most-featured work.Firstly, this article gives brief introduciton of the life of Ives and the work of“Charles Ives Symphony No.4”. Then follows the research and analysis of theorchestral feature of this music work in terms of professional orchestrate, which includsthe main creation skills, the exert of background band, the timbre management ofinstrument groups, the management of human voice in the work, and the exert andmanagement of the orchestral creation skills(the disposition of the melody、chorus aswell as polyphony; the exchange skills of the dynamics; the integral distribution of thecompositon). The writer hope to conclude the influence of Ives’s creation through theanalysis of “Charles Ives Symphony No.4”. Hope to make contributions to the domesticresearch of Ives, offering help to researchers on Ives’s orchestration.
