Ji Jiu Pian is the existing earliest and best preserved enlightenment textbook. Sincecame into being from Emperor Yuan who was the Emperor of Western Han Dynastyto Tang and Song Dynasties, it had been the leading enlightenment textbook ofancient China. With the evolution of time and language, gradually errors were discovered in thetext of Ji Jiu Pian and also there were many words that were hard to be understood bythe school kids. Therefore, many scholars from successive dynasties made manyannotations for the book, like Cao Shou from Later Han Dynasty, Liu Fang from WeiDynasty and Yan Chitui and so on. But these annotations gradually disappeared withthe appearance of Yan’s Annotation and meanwhile Wang Yinglin from the SouthernSong Dynasty made his extra annotations on the basis of Yan’s Annotation to correctthe errors and make supplements to the faults. In fact, these two works are the bestannotations of Ji Jiu Pian. But many of the researches from the past dynasties focused on the original textualresearch and emendation of the Ji Jiu Pian and there was little research of itsannotations especially the research of Yan’s Annotation. Therefore, the major work ofthis article is to reorganize and research the Yan Shigu’s annotation of Ji Jiu Pian soas to provide references to the study of Yan’s Annotation. Specifically, the contentincludes the following four parts.Introduction part mainly explains the reason, significance and research status of thetopic selection of thesis. Moreover, it introduces the related content of Ji Jiu Pianwhich involved its generation, content, names and so on; and briefly introduces YanShigu’s extraction, life story and the family tradition of learning plus his owndiligence which was the important factor why he could make great achievement onExegetics and Emendation. The first chapter mainly makes an introduction of the editions of Ji Jiu Pian, theeditions of Ji Jiu Pian’s Annotation and the current situation of Yan’s Annotation, andthe key point is to examine the spread and existing situation of Yan’s Annotationthrough the records in the official and private bibliography works of past dynasties. The second chapter is the emphasis of this article and it mainly makes someemendation to Yan’s Annotation that is available and also makes analysis of thedifference between words. The involved editions are the ancient Chinese books like JiGuoge carving copy, Continuation of Si Bu Cong Can, the first edition of Cong Shu JiCheng, Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature and edition of Xiao XueHui Han and so on. To some degree, errors like corruption, reversal words andmissing words can be found in all these editions and the writer hopes to discover thedifference and errors between each edition through the comparation of these editionsto reorganize a better Yan’s Annotation to the benefits of the reader’s reading andresearch. Besides, there are variant written phenomena between each edition includingVariants, Synonym, ancient and modern words, interchangeable words etc. Eventhough these variants can’t affect the understanding to the meaning of the text, theanalysis and study of these variants will help to discover the words characteristic ofeach edition. The third chapter mainly makes some research from the angle of annotation study. The annotation book of Yan Shigu was one of the major annotation study works inTang Dynasty and also the annotation of Ji Jiu Pian was one of his annotation books,so the study of the annotation of Ji Jiu Pian from the principle and content ofannotation study can not only help to observe the characteristics of Yan Shigu’sAnnotation, but also can enrich the historical data of the annotation science researchof Tang Dynasty. The fourth chapter mainly summarizes the achievement, gains and loss of Yan’sAnnotation. Clear explanation helps the school kids to understand and memorizeeasily; citing ancient works helps to reserve many document literature; it makes contribution to the study of etymology through discussing the terms source anduncovering the historical evolution of linguistic such as its generation, change andextinction. And all of these are the outstanding value of Yan Shigu’s annotation of JiJiu Pian. Even though there are some words that are explained ambiguously orwrongly in his annotation, its achievements outweigh its errors. And at the same timethe writer hopes that this study of the value, gains and loss of Yan’s Annotation canprovide some reference for the annotation and study of the later generations.
