| China and Korea have close relations in geography and history. The exchanges on politics, economy and culture between these two countries have been enhancing since 1992 on which year China and Korea established diplomatic relations. As a result, the people in these two countries have also promoted mutual understanding and trust. The full-length novel Great Jungle written by Jeong Lyae, Jo is the very product of this kind of exchanges. Great Jungle depicts a series of business war between merchants from Korea, Japan, America, France and other countries who are competing in China. It also shows China’s unique culture and the figure of Chinese people during G2 era.The name of this novel comes from the law of the jungle in the animal world which is always called ’the fittest survive’ and the symbol of China-The Great Wall. On one hand, the author clearly declares China has transformed from ’factory of the world’ to ’market of the world’ by means of this name; On the other hand, the name also implies the trade war in China nowadays is just like the law of nature in jungle, and the fittest will finally win in the competition. Based on the multi-level investigations and descriptions throughout the social realities of modern China, the author tries to display all parts of China including politics, economy, society, diplomacy and culture. It is worth noting that the writer has also sharply pointed out some serious social problems existing in China nowadays such as the wealth gap, the corruption and the wealth flaunt while affirming China’s remarkable economic progress. The writer believes that these social problems embody the duality of China’s political system and he wonders such a powerful China is a friend or an enemy to Korea on earth. Then he goes a step further to think about national relations between China, Korea, America, Japan and other countries.Great Jungle is a carrier which shows the imagine and cognition of China in Jeong Lyae, Jo’s mind as well as the self-identity and preservation of his own country. This paper is structured from the perspective of’Imagologie’, trying to analyze the figure of Chinese in the novel and the psychology of creating the image of another country based on’Ideological Image and Utopian Image’ What’s more, I attempt to investigate Jeong Lyae, Jo’s impressions of China and the Korean "outlook on China".Thus this paper launches from three aspects:1. The figure of Chinese people in the eyes of’The Other’In Chapter 2, the figures of Chinese people in Great Jungle are divided into three different types:image of officials, image of merchants and image of women. I analyzed these three kinds of images apart. Great Jungle not only gives a vivid description of commercial competition between powerful companies, but builds up representative images of China’s senior businessmen such as Sin Won, Sang and WanSing, Li as well. It also depicts the image of poor rural migrant workers in cities and tries to show the satire and criticism among the sharp contrast. The Chinese college student YenRing, Li who studies in Peking University is set up in the novel as a modern female that is good looking and thoughtful at the same time. She is a girl who have ideals and the love story between her and JyaeHyeong, Song, a Korean overseas student, implies the moral that China and Korea have begun a honeymoon period just like Song and Li. It also indicates an optimistic outlook between China and Korea. As a foreigner,Jeong Lyae, Jo portrays different kinds of images of Chinese people based on’Ideological Image and Utopian Image’under the view of ’The Other’. He tries to elucidate Chinese different cultural phenomena from Korea such as the ’relationship culture’, the ’face culture’, the rise of women’s social status and the’respect for wife and daughter’.2.’My self’mapped in Image of ChinaThe author describes Chinese in the view of ’The Other’, in the meantime, he tries to look into himself in the view of’Myself. In the novel, we can sometimes find words that mention the advantage of Koreans and Korean culture in a direct or indirect way, which shows the pride on the successes Koreans had made in China. The author also enumerates the similarities and differences between China and Korea, and then points out the shortcomings of his homeland. The Korean characters in Great Jungle such as DaeGwang Jeon, HyeonGon Kim, JyaeHyeong Song, and GyeongMan Ha are all shaped as positive and energetic people. We can easily find the words that imply Koreans are more outstanding than people from other countries especially better than Japanese in a proud tone everywhere in the novel. In addition, the author’s individual beliefs when judging China’s political system and Chinese Communist Party are worthy of attention as well. The depreciation on different political system comes from deeply approving of Korea’s democratic regime. It is exactly the trait of ’Ideological Image’. The author puts his own view first, observing other countries from the cultural mindset and the world view of himself, certainly, we can’t deny the possibility that the novel is written to Korean readers, so the writer judges other country in a’Korean Way’We can also find many characters look down upon China in the novel, and the writer attributes the cause to those people have preconceived notions and prejudices on China. The novel set’DaeGwang, Jeon’as the voice of the writer himself in order to correct the negative images of China and repeatedly emphasized that China’s strength is not an issue which Korea must face as a neighbor but also a global issue in the 21st century. The Korean overseas student JyaeHyeong Song witnessed two interviews to Chinese students of Peking University by America’s media and Korean media when studying in PKU. He marveled at the confidence and passion appeared on Chinese college student and he realized this kind of confidence and passion came from the strength of China in deep.3. The author’s imagination on China and culture psychology on KoreaLiterature is a mirror the society. The author usually depicts the image of other countries based on his own understanding and the need of his own country, or elucidate the culture psychology of his country by the figure of’The Other’. It is definitely not a process of simply shooting a picture for the country when the author creating the specific image of a foreign country. It embodies the author’s choice. As a consequence, it could be particularly important to research the meaning of social culture hiding in these features and to think about the culture formation process of the’observed’In the novel, we could notice the author feels both proud and awkward when facing the great achievement Korea had made from 1960s to 1970s such as the’Sale Myth’and the "Han-jiang Miracle" We can easily find this kind of feeling from the boast of Korean trade practitioners. We can not only find the vivid depiction of the process how Samsung defeated Sony in the novel, and the novel also mentions the fact that China learned from Korea which was regarded as one of ’The Four Asian Tigers’once. In the meantime, as a witness who has come through China’s economic boom, the author tries to tell his readers how to adapt to’the law of the jungle’ in current competition and then how to make it a win-win project for both China and Korea.Owing to the special geopolitical relationship between China and Korea, Korean authors tend to achieve their utilitarian aims when depicting the image of China. Criticizing the social and escaping from the reality are the commonest two reasons, and Great Jungle is no exception. In the sense of social imagination and social practice, the imagination of foreign countries as a product forming from social collective is built up upon the tension between integration function and disruption function. The image of China and the figures of Chinese people in Jeong Lyae, Jo’s novel has the dualism of the positive and negative characteristics. This does not exclude exaggeration on emotion judgment no matter praise or criticism. The reasons are as follows:To begin with, the author’s cognition of China and his judgement of Chinese culture are both narrated on the basis of Korean culture and serve the need of Korean society. Secondly, as a a disseminator of Chinese culture, the author’s identity and requirements lead to a limitation that the author’s subjective tendency is inevitable. In the end, Chinese culture is very complex, so it is hard to avoid cultural misreading if you cannot comprehensively understand it.From the practical view, Great Jungle can be regarded as a carrier that shows how much Korean literature concerns China and Chinese people. What’s more, it’s no doubt that the analyzation of the rules how ’One self’ imagine ’The Other’ under the view of’Imagologie’is very important, but acting as ’The Other’ in the real society, we must know how we are imagined and why we are imagined like that. Only in this way, can we look into ourselves correctly and deepen understanding to the’observers’. It is the exactly reason why we explore the images of China and the images of Chinese people in modern Korean literature. |
