The synonymous compound words is an important language phenomenon in which two or more words having the same or similar meaning are used together,indicating a relatively comprehensive and acting as the same gramamatical element in a sentence. As a special type of vocabulary phenomenon in Chinese, knowing its rules is necessaty to read and note ancient books, and study the meaning of archaich Chinese. This paper is to sdudy the synonymous compound words of Houhanji(《后汉纪》) according to the angle of synchronization and diachronicity, then has the following several parts:1. The introduction mainly gives a brief account of what our predecessors have study about it. And to dif ines the property of the synonymous compound words. And it shows the purpose and significances of the study.2. Dif ines the concept and criteria to sort out the synonymous compound words in Houhanjji(《后汉纪》)3. The synonymous compound words in Houhan ji (《后汉纪》)are divided into kinds:notionnal and function types. And the former comprises veb, adjective and noun.4. Through the analysis and study, we find the fllowning features of synonymous compound words:(1)The basic characteristics of synonym. (2) Has the feature of inherit in its process of develop. (3)The flexibility of synonymous compound.(4)The foundamental stability of parts of speech. (5)The singleness of the grammatical founctions. (6)The complexity of semantic meaning structure.5. Analyzes the reasons why the synonymous compound words come into being according to three sapects.6.In this chapter, we make textual criticism and explanations of some difficult words.7.In this chapter, wo point the importance of the synonymous compound words in lexicography.
