| The Southern Anhui Incident was the worst military conflict betweenthe Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China during theAnti-Japanese War, which greatly influenced the two sides and China’spolitics. After the incident, as the political power between the two parties,Middle Forces tried to stand on the neutral position between them, struggling to reconcile the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, continuing the united resistance against Japan. At the beginning of theincident, middle forces, on one hand, expressed their moral sympathy tothe Communist Party’s situation. On the other hand, they politically stoodon the position of the Chinese nation and national interests, neither unitedwith the Communist Party of China to against the Kuomintang, nor standwith the Kuomintang to criticize the New Fourth Army’s “disobedienceand mutingâ€.The foremost target of the Middle Forces during the Anti-JapaneseWar is to unit against foreign. They therefore restored the confidence inKuomintang’s in the Anti-Japanese War after the publication of ChiangKai-shek’s “central memorial week†conversation and seeingKuomintang’s active resistance to the Japanese army’s new attacks. Atthis time, Middle Forces, on one hand, stuck to their middle positions. Onthe other hand, they changed the attitude toward the Communist Party ofChina subtly. As the date of Political Meeting draws near, Middle Forcesattempted to mediate the tensions between the two parties through thePolitical Meeting. But the representatives of the Communist Party ofChina refused to attend. Standing on the ground of maintaining domesticunity and consistent resistance, middle forces started to condemn theCommunist Party of China in public, and jointly established their ownparty, "the Alliance of Chinese democratic groups", shortly after themeeting. In other words, the middle forces’ moral sympathy for the Communistparty of China and their relatively "maverick" political position runparallel. The middle forces were even criticizing some political ideas andpolicies of the Communist Party of China when sympathize theCommunist party of China’s encounters in The Southern Anhui Incident. At least, the viewpoint which confusing moral and political, generallythinking that the Middle Forces sympathize and support the CommunistParty of China after the incident, expressing their discontent andindignation to the Kuomintang’s anti-communist actions is incomplete, ornot entirely accurate. |
