| The purpose of interpreting is to express the meaning of the speaker’s speech clearly. In order to achieve this aim, appropriate cohesive devices must be exploited to make the interpretation coherent and fluent. Interpretation is not just a simple conversion of the language, the interpreter must make sure the interpretation is smooth and fluent so that the audience can understand the speaker’s meanings. Using proper cohesive devices will make the interpretation coherent and fluent. Therefore, the cohesion in discourses is very important for the study of interpretation. Many scholars at home and abroad have a deep research on cohesion theory. However, the current research on cohesive devices is mainly about translation, rarely about interpretation. In this paper, several main cohesive devices that proposed by Halliday have been used to analyze the consecutive interpreting text of British Prime Minister Cameron’s speech. This thesis is composed of three parts. Part One makes an analysis on the characteristics of cohesive devices and consecutive interpretation. Part Two makes a brief introduction to the questions that were found when interpreting the speech. Part Three is the key part of the paper, which including the application and analysis of some major cohesive devices. |
