People tend to maintain the fading traditional culture while ignoring the existing art. However, they should not forget that beings today are the history of the future. Compared to keeping rescuing the fading cultures, it is more important to value the precious cultural resources alive. This thesis mainly examines the development of current dance documentaries. It introduces the development of western documentaries and dance documentaries, and probes into their history and present situation by means of case studies on classic dance documentaries. Furthermore, through analysis of the author ’ s self-produced dance documentary Nuo Yuan, this study explores the integration of camera language and body language, as well as the value and significance of dance documentaries in the era of new media. The thesis consists of five parts: the first part provides a brief introduction to documentary, making comparisons and contrasts between Chinese and western documentaries, elaborating on their difference and present-day situation. For the second part, the thesis briefly introduces Nuo, in particular Nuo in Shiyou, a village situated in Nanfeng County in east China’s Jiangxi Province. This will help to further illustrate MASK and Nuo Face, two works created by Professor Guo Lei. The third part mainly describes the production process of the author’s dance documentary Nuo Yuan. The fourth part unveils the trials and explorations of the production process, including the in-depth dialogue between dance and creation of image. This part also considers the relationship between traditional culture and modern consciousness. For the fifth part, the thesis considers all media communication from the perspective of the composition’s new media form. In addition, the conclusion part delivers commendations to the distinguished values of spirit and energy of dance documentaries, and puts forward the fact that the dance documentary is still developing in its initial period.
