In the field of Second Language Teaching and Learning, Needs Analysis is a processwhich determines ’what to teach’ and ’how to teach’, and it is the primary step ofinstructional design. Teaching Chinese as Second Language (TCSL) is a branch ofSecond Language Teaching and Learning, so it also needs Needs Analysis to make’teaching’ and ’learning’ more appropriate. The teaching effect will be approvedefficiently.This thesis attempts to investigate learning needs of the Southeast Asiaundergraduate students whose major is Chinese, who come to Chinese HigherEducation Institutions to have short-term learning, with qualitative and quantitativeresearch methods. The whole research is based on questionnaires, and supplemented bygroup interviews. Investigation design is based on the Needs Analysis Mode whichwas constructed by Hutchinson&Waters, and combined with domestic scholars’related research and actual teaching situation.The general status of learning needs of Southeast Asia undergraduate students, whocome to Chinese Higher Education Institutions to have short-term learning, ispresented through analyzing the details on the three basic teaching phases:the entrance,classroom learning and exam,provided by68subjects who come from InternationalCollege of Honghe University. At last, relevant recommendations are made from thecharacter of the short-term program, the arrangement of teaching time, the teachingobjectives and checking system, teaching and learning aspects on and off class,curriculum, teacher’s special role in short-term Chinese learning programs.This paper is consisted of six parts:The first part is Introduction. It gives a brief introduction of the necessity and thesignificance of the research. It discusses the design of the research in detail, includingthe problem, subjects, methods and data collection.The second part is the first chapter:A survy of the short-term teaching of theSoutheast Asia undergraduate students.The third part is the second chapter: Research Data Findings. It makes a detailedanalysis of the target needs and learning needs of68subjects.The fourth part is the third chapter: Suggestions. It makes some related suggestionsfrom six aspects-the character of the short-term program, principle of teaching, curriculum,the teaching objectives, instrctional mode, checking system.Finally, Conclusion section makes a systematic summary of the paper, and reflectsthe inadequacy of the whole research.
