| In daily life, we use two methods to express affirmative meanings. One is affirmation, the other is double negation. Like the mathematical formula of "two negatives make a positive", double negation is the linguistic phenomenon that two negations equal affirmation.About double negation, the most ordinary explanation is that two negative compositions in the form express affirmative meaning. However, double negative sentence is not equal to affirmative sentence, since double negative sentences are more powerful or more mild and indirect compared with common affirmative sentences. When people express strong affirmation or tactful affirmation, they are more likely to use double negative sentences.Double negative is a linguistic phenomenon that people use in daily life, which exists particularly in both Korean language and Chinese language. But Chinese is categorized in isolating language and Korean agglutinative. The difference of language family makes the double negations in the two languages differ in expressing methods.Up till now, both Korean and Chinese scholars have studies the issue of double negation. However, the comparison studies between the two languages are sill a gap needs to be filled. Therefore, this dissertation will compare double negations in Korean and Chinese, investigating double negative expressions in the two languages from pattern of manifestation, significance and pragmatics, so as to find the differences and similarities between them for better studies of the two languages. |
