| With the rapid economic development in China, the society has higher requirements for students graduated form higher vocational colleges. English language teaching, as an important part of the higher vocational education, aims at cultivating practical talents with high quality and high professional qualification. However, its achievements so far are not totally satisfactory. So, in order to promote the reform of vocational English teaching, improve the teaching quality and realize the training objectives, it is necessary to well-known the characteristics of vocational English teaching, analysis the current status, and find the problems and corresponding solutions.This paper is divided into four parts, as the follows:At first, this article states the background and the researching significance of choosing this topic. And then define the researching mentality and researching methods on the basis of doing the literature review.In the second part, the article explores the current status, characteristics and existing problems in vocational English teaching. This article defines several concepts involved in it and state the development of vocational English teaching. Secondly, it analyses the current status of vocational English teaching and the reasons for its existing problems by clean up the collected data. The existing problems include the students’ low English level, their lack of motivation to study, the out-of-date teaching methods, the single teaching model, the irrational evaluation system, the poor structured teaching staff and the shortage of the teachers’ qualities. On this basis, the article analyses the main characteristics and conditions of vocational English teaching.The third section looks into the real practice in J Institute. By carrying out the questionnaire survey among students who are not majored in English, we get to know students’view towards English teaching, analyze advantages and problems of the teaching reform and gain enlightenment from it. And then set the English teaching in the in Electro-mechanical Engineering Department as an example. The author introduces the measures in English teaching reform from six aspects, which are:reform in teaching concepts, reform in teaching content, reform in teaching model, reform in teaching methods, reform in evaluation system, reform in extracurricular activities.In the fourth part, the author makes a study of some countermeasures against the problems. Hence some measures and suggestions to reform vocational English teaching are put forward mainly focusing on the following five aspects, namely:the transformation of the teaching model, the improvement in the teaching methods, the perfection of the teaching evaluation and the enhance the training of teachers.Through the research of characteristics and exciting problems of English teaching in vocational school, this article is for the purpose of solving the problems form the root. The author tries to arouse some government departments’ attention to the significance of high quality English teaching. It’s high time for us to take an action to improve the quality of English teaching form the source. From it, my study has practical and theoretical significance to a certain extent in promoting the reform of vocational English teaching and improving the teaching quality. |
