Today’s animation, on account of getting over its original awkward state, now becomes a popular art form that integrates into contemporary life with its unique entertainment representability and emotional infectivity, gradually turning into the most active visual cultural phenomenon as well as the industrial category with best developing foreground in modern times.Chinese animation career started early as Wan Brothers committed themselves to research the art of animation in the1920s. In the1950s, guided by the "fashion of exploring ethnic forms", there were a lot of influential works of art created, which were critically acclaimed due to its strong ethnic style and Chinese flavor, forming a integrial Chinese animation art system. However, since the beginning of this new era, especially during the industrialization transition process, the domestic animation lost their artistic traditions by reason of development status of seeking quick success and instant benefits。Although the "nationalization" has been a programmatic slogan of the industry, but in recent years, the animation products have often being interpretating of ethnic culture in one-sided and superficial way. In this age of globalization, if the huge ethnic culture resources can not be enough industrially developed by Chinese animation industry, it is undoubtedly as the ancient proverb says "a begger will ride a horse to death"。In contrast, the United States with its strong cultural integration forces as well as Japan with its cultural affinity with China have being developing Chinese ethnic culture resources, playing the "China card" in the international arena, attractting many Chinese audiences by production interspersing with the Chinese cultural elements. Thereby the strong culture propagation phenomena has come into being. In view of this, this paper, taking animations and ethnic culture as an entry point, by presenting Chinese culture of animations of the United States, Japan and China and studying detailedly the Chinese animations, analyzes the development dilemma of Chinese animations, and makes an attempt on making some shallow suggestions. This paper includes5chapters:Preface describes the significance of the topic and the overview of the origin and development of the art of animation.1st chapter introduces the concept of the Chinese traditional culture and the relationship with animation. Chapter2nd describes how ethnic traditional culture reflects in animation products. Due to cultural differences, different countries, with their unique ethnic cultural characteristics, elucidate Chinese culture in different way. In3rd chapter, the author analyzes China’s traditional animation, and the art forms and cultural connotations of domestic animation are discussed in terms of ethnic arts, folk literature and cultural ethos.Chapters4th, together with5th analyze the problems of copycat, lacking of innovation, unbalance of targeting audiences that appear in domestic animation at present. The cause of these cultural dilemmas mainly dues to the lack of cultural connotation leads to misunderstanding of ethnic expression, therefore the dohestic animation is of formalism instead of romantic charm. For this situation above mentioned, this paper suggests the expression strategies of current animation creation, such as the modern expression of traditional culture, the development of techniques and aesthetics of animation and the regression of traditional aesthetic etc.. The final conclusion section summarizes the the former sections. In the end, we are looking forward to the good Chinese animation ethnicization process of new era.
