On Zhixu 's Thought Of Law

During the late Ming and early Qing periods, the disadvantages of Buddhism coincided with enormous political and social ructions in China, the Precepts of Sangha community had been a complete breakdown.The monks’ quality were low and mixed together. At that time, the primary task is to strengthen the construction of the Buddhist Sangha community, and they should practice according to the Buddhist precepts strictly. In the face of such situation, Zhi Xu was a famous Buddhist priest, who lived in the late Ming Dynasty, and read vinaya for three times in his whole life. Zhi Xu studied hard in vinaya and predecessors’ literary works, so his thought accedes and developed predecessors’ commandment ideology. Zhi xu could always introduce some new elements from the previous Legal thoughts, which provided basic guarantee and theoretical possibility for further promote the Buddhist thoughts.Firstly, this article reveals the social or individual reason in studying and carring forward the Vinaya by means of Zhi Xu’s life and his writings. Also his early Confucian education and the experience of studying and promoting the Vinaya,which made a great influence on his Legal thoughts.Then By analyzing Zhi Xu’s writing, this paper explains the content and characteristics of his legal thoughts. The core idea of his legal thoughts is spiritual practices, which is most important things in practicing Buddhism. In addition, his legal thoughts absorb human factors in Confucian doctrine and the thoughts of Buddhist sects. In particular, the characteristics of his legal thoughts are upholding the precepts and receiving precepts strictly, etc.Finally, this paper discusses the important characteristics of Zhi Xu’s ideology system emphasis on building the Sangha organization. And he emphases the personal practice enhances the insight in legal thoughts’ ideological and theoretical, which deepen the theoretical construction in legal thoughts. The value and impact of Zhi Xu’s legal thoughts are his special content, which entered a powerful spiritual force and theoretical strength in ideological development of Buddhism.By reference to historical documents in this paper, this stands in the perspective of the ideological history in order to research in the relevant writings of Zhi Xu’s Legal thoughts on the background of the development of Legal thoughts in China. In highlight of Zhi Xu’s Ideological characteristics, this paper is trying to see the construction and affect of his legal thought’s system.
