Ang Lee is a world-famous Chinese director who has directed12feature films. He has a high visibility in the international film with a wide range of works. On the base of good box office and the art of deep thinking, all the works have complex themes and different style, which make the perfect work of realizing the combination of art and commerce, showing Ang Lee’s super talent to direct different types of film. As a Chinese director who moved to the United States, he drifts between the culture of east and west to which he adjusted in the collision and conflict cautiously. His works show a strong sense of identity, as same as the rationality of human nature and desire, which devoted to identity examines and self-identity. Till now, the theoretical study of Ang Lee’s film focuses on the aesthetic style of the film content and the analysis of the cultural identity, rarely start a research from the perspective of self-identity. Through the contemporary aesthetic culture, guided by the related theory, the author analyse the self-identity of Ang Lee’s work with the theory of interpretation from the perspective of self-identity.First chapter:Along with the development of the relevant theory of self-identity in disciplines such as philosophy, psychology and cultural studies, self-identity has its specific concrete connotation of modern. In contemporary aesthetic culture, self-identity is a problem of identity crisis. At the same time it has come to be a new theory angle of view and method; As a cultural form of self-identity, Film shows strong performance and influence in the expression of modern people’s self-identity. Ang Lee and the content of his movies all show the discussion of self-identity consciousness.Second chapter:The director Ang Lee’s special experience of life and work let him have multiple identities. Accompanied by mixed identity and self lost, with the experience of cultural shock and personality repression from family and school education, and then the development of two phases of exploration and innovation after being a film director, he gradually shaped self-awareness and realized the self-identity in the movie, at the same time he made the self shaping by the films continually. To Ang Lee, film is the maximum stretching of his individual will, as same as the dream which let the subconscious mind freely gallop in. It is the main path of self-identity.Third chapter:The images of Ang Lee’s film are all alternative vulnerable groups who have diversified and mixed identities in the face of common identity crisis. According to the release time, films successively from family ethics, national discourse, and the natural environment three aspects, express the human self and proceed self-identity simulation deeply step by step. Ang lee’s film to the identity crisis did not put forward concrete solving methods, but it causes the audience to think and make them reflect on their own self-identity.The fourth chapter, Ang Lee’s films from the financing of Chinese and western culture to show, the multiple language use, and the adherence to the traditional narrative, etc., to modern self-identity has important guiding significance. But we must realize the film’s paradox of performancing self-identity:Both of guiding the self-identity and resulting in identity crisis coexist in film which comes from the film’s dual character of art and commerce dual attributes. The demand of exploring self-awareness and realize in modern self-identity for film must be properly combined with art and commerce.The visual cultural swerve of post-modern society is becoming the undeniable fact, which bring revolutionary changes in human self-identification method. Among them, the film has influence character by environment effects on modern self-identity changes, the internal mechanism of identity also need further research on the theory of identity. Finally, in the present situation of our country’s film, on the self-identification performance, domestic film should be based on the Ang Lee’s film as guidance and reflect of their own problems to seek the development of the road.
