| Tile-end is one of the most important components of Chinese ancient architecture; it has both practical and aesthetic functions. Tile-end of the Six Dynasties has its own system; it is a connecting link of Chinese ancient tile-end history. As the ancient capital, Nanjing has the most typical tile-ends of the Six Dynasties, and the tile-end with human-face design is especially distinctive.In this paper, the tile-end with human-face design unearthed in Nanjing is studied from the outside to the inside, from the shallower to the deeper, applying the methods of archaeology, modeling analysis and iconography. In the archaeological study, the materials of the tile-end with human-face design are combed comprehensively; the origin, classification and influence of the tile-end are introduced approximately. In the modeling analysis, some guiding principles are summed up, the master of line and plane, the methods of distortion and exaggeration, the expression of the spirit and the artistic conception are worth learning in decorative painting. In the iconographical study, the social conditions and the psychological roots behind the tile-end with human-face design are explored; the identification of the human face is discussed in this article, they are fairies with ordinary human faces, the purpose of this kind of tile-end is to drive away evil spirits and pray blessing for the owners. |
