As an indispensable part of visual communication design, commercial illustrator(hereinafter “CI”)also has own development process. Today, modern illustrationshave become more than one carrier applied art under a strong driving force ofmarket-oriented economy and established a huge multidisciplinary system. Itsinfluence permeated all areas of current economy, culture and life. The values ofillustration evolve rfom the traditional "painting telling story" to various areas. Sofar,CI has become one of the forms of media people loved.A wide variety of mainstream or non-mainstream elements are modiifed,introduced,and quickly added to the commercial production and sales process, to achieve theperfect combination of commercial and artistry,the value of existing CI graduallybeing recognized by businesses. As technology advances, the application of digitaltechnology to commercial illustrator injected new vitality, which makes connotationand extension of illustration have been extended and sublimated, also makes it worthmore prominent. CI can reflect culture of an era, since its unique value propertywhich injects arts and cultural connotations into the business as well as makes proift.With the rapid development of modern media, the scope of CI involves more widely.In this modern era of interdependence and mutual penetration of visual arts andcommercial art, people began to pay more attention to understand the illustration’srole in market-oriented economy.I attempt to analyze the business value of modern illustration through the previousstudy on it in this paper. First at all, I reach to a point that the CI play a role of"pictures telling stoir"es by analysis of most sophisticated three fields of illustrationapplications such as book design, advertising design and packaging design andcombination of its commercial and artistic values. Secondly, extract the core valueof CI by excavating its value of property in different fields and analyzing thedifferent form of arts on modern CI through according to realistic examples. Thirdly,according to the impact of popular culture on the value of CI, further analysis of thedemands on the value of modern illustration. Finally, analysis on design guidelinesof CI and the development of the domestic CI and then explore and give mypersonal views on it. Hope to play a positive role in the trend of studies of ChineseCI arts, and left specific theoretical references.
