Roger Sessions is an important composer, theorist and educator in the20th century of America. He created two operas, one drama music, nine symphonies, violin concertos, piano concertos, chorus, songs, etc. He also wrote many papers and books. He has the lofty status in promoting and developing American music. As a composer, he is an American music to absorb European influence is the representative figure of the genre. As a theorist, his writings in the United States and has considerable influence in the world. As an educator, he made a lot of student later pillar of American composer and music theorists, for example John Adams, Milton Babbitt, Leon Kirchner, Conlon Nancarrow, Peter Maxwell Davies, Ross Lee Finney, and so on. The famous music theorist of China Yao Jinxin is also his student.His early creation are greatly influenced by the neoclassical style, then gradually with twelve-tones technique, mainly use the traditional music genre, like symphony’s form. His music has rigorous formation and obscure content.This thesis research object "ninth symphony" is one of his late works, adopted the classical symphony genres, and mature twelve-tones technique. It is divided into three parts of introduction, mainly body and conclusion. The introduction mainly introduces characteristics of neoclassicism music, the mixed style of neoclassicism and twelve-tones of Roger Sessions, and the selected topic reason and research method of this paper. The main body is divided into three chapters. The first will discuss the serials of the work, their characteristic and usage in music cell developing. The second chapter will discuss the structure of this work and the usage of serial in the melody movement. The third chapter will discuss some characteristics of twelve-tones harmony, music texture and orchestrate. The conclusion part will carry on a review and summery of this thesis.
