Govind Mishra is a relatively influential writer who has been active in theliterary world of Hindi. His works, with a wide range of subjects, distinctivecharacters and rich philosophic implications, have been well received by the readersat large. His novel, Paanch Anganowala Ghar punished in1995, is his seventh novel.The novel depicts the fifty years of ups and downs of three generations in an Indianfamily from1940to1990, when India was undergoing a huge society change. Thenovel also reveals that after independence, Indian people, affected by Westernthoughts, have gradually abandoned the idealism that Gandhi had alwaysadvocated in his time and they remain trapped in the mental state of being selfish,indifferent and lost. The novel also shows the changes of Indian people’s philosophyand axiology to readers.Beginning from Govind Mishra’s life story and creative course, this thesisanalyes the theme and artistic features of the novel. Set in that historical condition, itpoints out the great changes in India’s politics,economy,society and people’s mentallife, meanwhile, probes into the causes of the phenomenon in depth.The thesisdepicts different life roads of three generations represented as Radhelal, Rajan andBantu, revealing their general underestanding to the ideal and life values anddescribing enormous transformations in India’s social ideology.The passage analysesprofound causes hiding behind ideological changes through these aspects of Westernthought trend, Western education, Urbanization and social transformations as well. Itconcludes the subject of this novel so to provide a guideline for readers to facepuzzles and confusions in their mental life more objectively and more reasonably.
