Religion and literature are closely connected with each other, religion provides diversifiedsubjects for literature and literature serves as the carrier of religion, and neither can existeffectively without the other. The combination of Buddhism and poetry produces the BuddhistPoetry. As an important part of religious literature, the Buddhist Poetry plays an essential role inpromoting the development of missionary activities and poetic culture. In addtition, the monkpoets plays a leading and decisive part during the process. This thesis chooses the poems ofBaZhiTouTuo and Wanhai Han Longyun, who are two representative monk poets from China andKorea, as research objectives and makes a comparison between their poems.From the view of historical background, both of the two monk poets lived in the end offeudal dynasty; from the view of life experience, both of them were born in countries, experiencedrough life, became monks in their youth and devoted themselves to the reform and development ofBuddism; from the view of poetic creation, both of them are talented and are bold in various stylesof poem, such as Buddist poetry, patriotic poetry, associating poetry and presenting poetry, and lefta large number of outstanding works for later generarions; as for their spirits, the two monks stillcare for the countries and the people although they have converted to Buddism. Persisting insaving the nation and the religion, they try to save the nation through various ways. BaZhiTouTuoand Wanhai Han Longyun are not only monks and poets but also the warriors, their multipleidentities exert profound influence on their poetic creation.Through the analysis of the poetic works of the two monk poets, this thesis aims at findingout the similarities and differences and digging into the deep reasons. The similarities will stronglyprove the ideas that “Religion has no borders” and “Literature has no borders”. In addition, thedifferences also help to highlight that different environments bring up different characters andthinking modes, which contributes to the distinct characteristics of the literary creation. This thesiswill also reveal the connection between the religion and literature, which is deeply interpenetratedwith the other, and the religious poets’ spiritual world filled with contradictions and stugglesduring the Time of Troubles will be demonstrated. What’s more, this thesis aims at showing themysterious charm of the religious literature by the thorough and innovative analysis of the twopoets’ works. As a result, the religous literature will be paid more attention.From the view of academic significance, there is no comparative study of the two monkpoets--and Wanhai Han Longyun by other scholars, thus the selected topic is of great creativityand academic signifcance. From the view of practical significance, to seek the similarities anddifferences on the two monk poets’ poetic creation, and to realize China and Korea’s cultural senseof belonging, which forms from the same origion, and to explore the people’s distinct nationalcharacters and thinking modes, will play an important role in China’s and Korea’s Buddisimexchange and cultural understandings. Meanwhile the two monk poets’ noble sentiments of“Caring for the country and people as a Buddhist” can enlighten us that we can love the “country”and the “religion” at the same time, and the patriotic zeal of the religious believers can be largelyinspired.
