ObjectiveAs matters stand, Chinese teenagers are in lower fitness levels, ignorant of the value of life, and haven’t established the outlook of life completely. The purpose of this paper was to excavate the connotation of the concept of life and health from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture(TCMC); study on the model design of the popularization and dissemination of TCMC in primary and secondary schools; search for material of life and health education that suitable for China’s national conditions and local culture; carry out life and health education for teenagers which is likely to promote the popularity of the content of life and health education in TCMC among adolescents, help young people to establish a scientific world outlook, a positive life view and the correct values, so as to stimulate their passion for life, the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, and obtain harmonious development of body and mind. It was a positive response to the promotion of Chinese excellent traditional culture, and had certain theoretical and practical significance to the further research and generalization of TCMC.MethodsThis thesis was divided into four parts:the literature review, the investigation, the study on the propagation path, and the research on the model design of school-based curriculum.By the method of literature research, the literature review part which aimed at excavating the connotation of life and health education in TCMC, reviewed the content and form of the education of life and health at all times and in all countries. At the same time, through in-depth study of Chinese Herbal Medicine Culture(CHMC)resources, this part mainly discussed the connotation and characteristics of CHMC, in order to deepen the comprehension and understanding of CHMC, so as to provide material of life and health education for teenagers.The investigation section, based on the data collected through interviews, surveyed the current situation of the spread of TCMC in Beijing city. In addition, through the design of the questionnaire which both popular and reasonable about health concept and the cognition of TCMC, the research on the middle school students in Beijing city was conducted and the students’ status of health concepts, awareness of TCMC, and their interest points were obtained by means of questionnaire evaluation and statistical analysis.The section of propagation path research, by the method of investigation and practice, investigated the mode of the school curriculum, found out the fit point between TCMC and school based curriculum, and explored different paths for teacher training and the feasibility, so as to put forward the specific path and operation steps of the dissemination of TCMC in school education among the teenagers.The section of the model design of school-based curriculum through searching the classic literature of TCM and works of past dynasties physicians, refined the knowledge of school-based curriculum of TCM, and combined the connotation of TCMC such as the view of life, concept of health, view of disease, concept of life-nourishing, concept of treatment et al. with the students’interest and demand, which aimed at compiling school-based curriculum by employing the language that easy to be understood by students and the forms which in line with the characteristics of them.ResultsThe literature review part, which drew lessons from domestic and foreign educational experience, explored the materials about life and health education that adapted to the Chinese context and the local culture from the core idea of TCMC such as the concept of life, concept of health, view of disease, life-nourishing and the overall concept which based on the essence of the traditional culture. Meanwhile, this part mainly discussed the connotation and characteristics of CHMC from seven aspects, respectively wa:culture on the property of Chinese Herbal Medicine(CHM), harmonious culture of CHM, regional culture of CHM, culture on benefitting mankind of CHM, culture on life-nourishing of CHM, culture on naming principle of CHM, and the folk culture of CHM, which provided material based on CHMC of life and health education for teenagers.The investigation section, which emphasized the necessity of popularizing TCMC in primary and secondary schools by surveying the current situation of the spread of TCMC in Beijing city, was elaborated on the status quo of the education of TCMC in adolescents and the teaching mode in elementary and secondary education and early childhood education, and put forward a number of issues and specific recommendations on the dissemination of TCMC. In addition, the online survey for students in 10 junior schools of Beijing was carried out with the research tool as questionnaire of "Health and life culture of Traditional Chinese Medicine", which was designed through three rounds of argumentation and appraisal by experts, based on the methods of random sampling and cluster sampling. Finally,2270 valid questionnaires were obtained. The results indicated that the junior school students of Beijing had a high interest in TCMC, whose awareness of health and life was relatively ambiguous and cognition degree of TCMC was insufficient, due to the absence of reliable understanding channels of TCMC. It had become an urgent requirement for junior school students to popularize TCMC and carry out the life and health education.The section of propagation path research presented several feasible paths and steps on the propagation of TCMC in primary and secondary schools, such as training the volunteer team, training school teachers, holding lectures by TCM experts, interdisciplinary penetration of teaching, other paths, etc.The section of the model design of school-based curriculum carried out the curriculum pattern with single CHM as clue which selected a specific CHM as the main line in each class, by introducing its pharmacognostic characteristics such as name, source, plant morphology, harvesting and processing, flavor and meridian tropism, the effectiveness of applications, character, identification, chemical constituents, pharmacological action and clinical application et al. and explaining its cultural content such as the named source, legends, edible value, medicated cooking, and poetry appreciation and so on, in which teachers could select the content of different levels that adapted to the difference of cognitive characteristics of primary and middle school students. Moreover, according to the characteristics of Clinical Chinese Pharmacy, this part, which based on CHM as the carrier, by combining the content of CHMC such as the theory on property of CHM, processing, compatibility, efficacy, and application et al with the connotation of TCMC such as the concept of health, view of life, view of disease, concept of life-nourishing, concept of treatment and so on, conceived and compiled the curriculum system called "Chinese Herbal Medicine such as life", which took teenagers’ cognitive characteristics and interests about TCMC into consideration by means of popularization and personification. The curriculum consisted of eleven chapters, respectively was:"Virtues of CHM", "Yin-yang of herbal property and the balance of life", "The culture of moderation of CHM", "Famous-region drug", "CHM and etiology", "The medicine food homology", "Seasonal Therapy and CHM", "Culture on naming principle of CHM", "The similarity of CHM and life", "CHM and folk-custom", "Preparation of CHM and frustration of life".ConclusionsIn short, by means of theoretical research and questionnaire investigation, this paper sorted out the actuality of communication of TCMC in primary and secondary schools and the cognition and interests towards TCMC of the teenagers in Beijing, advanced the path of the popularization of TCMC, and prepared the curriculum pattern with single CHM as clue and the curriculum mode called "Chinese Herbal Medicine such as life" from the cultural resources of CHM, which laid the foundation for further development of life and health education related to TCMC.
