Background:The spleen is the foundation of acquired constitution, the source of qi and blood, and governs the transportation and transformation of nutrients. Children grow up and mature rapidly, hence they require more nutrients than adults. The organs of children are delicate and their spleen is often deficient, therefore the transportation and transformation functions of the spleen and stomach have yet to become strong and healthy, hence are easily harmed by various factors. Children have not acquired the knowledge to guard themselves from extreme heat or cold, neither are they able to control their diet, resulting in the catching of colds and poor dietary habits, resulting in the diminishment of yang qi, which causes harm to the spleen and stomach. If the child has a poor inherent constitution, with spleen-stomach yang deficiency, his/her spleen and stomach functions will be weaker than that of children with normal constitutions. Exogenous factors, dietary causes and inherent spleen-stomach yang deficiency can cause the diminishment of spleen and stomach function, disturbance of acquirement and transportation functions, resulting in the development of countless diseases. Hence our research into the application of core-warming and spleen-fortifying massage techniques in the treatment of common pediatric conditions has major clinical significance.Aim:To discuss the application of core-warming and spleen-fortifying massage techniques in the treatment of common pediatric conditions.Method:The overview summarizes research on ancient texts and modern works on pediatric massage, including recent research on the treatment of common pediatric illnesses using massage therapy.42 pediatric patients with diarrhea due to spleen deficiency and 48 cases with poor appetite due to spleen deficiency from the Pediatric Massage Department of Dongzhimen Hospital between the period of September,2014 to February,2016 were chosen for our clinical study. Our diagnostic standard followed the "Standards for Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Diagnosis and Clinical Efficacy" set by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Personal information, data and scoring for clinical presentation were collected for each group of patients, core-warming and spleen-fortifying massage techniques were carried out for patients daily, determining the amount of treatments required according to the change in each child’s condition. The comparison between the pre-and post-treatment syndrome scores of the children was used to determine clinical efficacy. Results:Core-warming and spleen-fortifying massage techniques are most widely used in the treatment of pediatric digestive disorders, especially for pediatric diarrhea, poor appetite, gastric pains, constipation, malnutrition etc; then in certain phases of respiratory diseases, for example recurrent respiratory tract infection, remission phase of asthma, allergic rhinitis, chronic cough etc; and are also used in the treatment of miscellaneous diseases, for example hypersalivation, night crying, post-infection spleen deficiency syndrome. In the treatment of spleen-deficient diarrhea, core-warming and spleen-fortifying techniques cured 10 cases (23.81%), were significantly effective in 12 cases (28.57%), were effective in 20 cases(47.62%), hence total efficacy was 100%. In the treatment of poor appetite due to spleen-deficiency, core-warming and spleen-fortifying techniques cured 22 cases (45.83%), were significantly effective in 17 cases (35.42%), were effective in 7 cases(14.58%), hence total efficacy was 97.91%.Conclusion:(1) Core-warming and spleen-fortifying techniques were significantly effective in the treatment of digestive disorders such as diarrhea, gastric pains, poor appetite, malnutrition, constipation, etc; respiratory diseases such as fever, recurrent respiratory tract infection, cough, asthma, allergic rhinitis etc; hypersalivation, night crying, post-infection spleen deficiency syndrome. (2) Core-warming and spleen-fortifying techniques can significantly improve syndrome scores of paediatric diarrhea and poor appetite due to spleen deficiency, and have significant clinical efficacy.
