The Network Management System (NMS) is very important to a complex network system, and this kind of network is composed of different kinds of devices. The NMS deal with topology management, performance management, fault management, therefore, make the network perform smoothly.In a large-scale network, it is impossible to manage all devices in the Network Management System (NMS), because there are different kinds of devices in the net. Each kind of device is managed by the Entity Management System (EMS). All EMS communicate with the NMS with a standard interface. In a small-scale network, it is not necessary to have a NMS, but the EMS can't provide function to manage the network. The common method is to develop a new system to manage the small-scale network, and this will result in wasting. The concept of NMS at EMS level is provided here. The system is an EMS and it provides interface for high level NMS, and it have got the function to manage the network itself, so it is a NMS too. Because the device has many constraints in function, it is inefficient to manage the system only by SNMP or HTTP. The methods of managing the devices with SNMP and HTTP protocol are discussed in this thesis.The function of NMS, the development of NMS and the technique used by NMS are introduced first. The SDH technique is shown in this paper. The structure of FRX device and current manage system is provided too. The structure of a large-scale network is illustrated, and finally SNMP v1, SNMP v2 and SNMP v3 is introduced too.The system structure for FRX NMS is designed according to well-known NMS structure and the characteristics of FRX device. With this structure, user can assign task to SNMP and HTTP, manage the network efficiently. The structure will provide interface for higher NMS.The thesis illustrate the modules, interface and communication in the structure. JDBC, Proc*C and Socket are introduced to implement the system.
