With the development of the electronic technology, people have entered a times of electronic information, in this ages, the multimedia has been an important role in electronic communication. The information of digital video, as the most important and complex one and having the largest amount of data in multimedia, is applied in many fields and has progressed very much after the information procession technology is developed enormously. It is well known that the teams of MPEG-X and the teams of H.26X which is respectively established by ISO/IEC and ITU-T. But Recently, ISO/IEC and ITU-T join again to establish and release anew generation international video coded standard: H.264, which is a very advanced performance and most complex standard.By analyzing the statistic characteristic of video data and knowing the basic methods of video coding, this paper introduces the principle of H.264 and elaborates on its key function modules of H.264 and new technologies being adopted in H.264 standard, for example: intra prediction, variable-size block motion estimation, 4 X 4 DCT-based integer transform, multi-reference frames, context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding and loop filter. With the base of the above studies, in order to improve the efficiency of the video coding and expand the rang of multimedia technologies applied, this paper put forward to the improved and optimized methods of intra mode choice and full pixel motion estimation and sub-pixel motion estimation fast algorithm, so improving the efficiency of video coding.
