With the development of personal communication, the "burst mode" transmission has recently received more and more attention. More and more communication systems will have the characteristic of "burst mode".Synchronization is very important in a "burst mode" communication system and it has been one of focuses of communication systems in recent years. So the work in this dissertation is originated from this problem. The major work and innovations done in the dissertation are shown as follows:1. It introduces basic theory of timing synchronization and analyzes basic methods of it. It also discusses the problems of the current synchronizations applied in "burst mode" communication systems which has a significant guiding in the design of new methods of synchronization.2. The BER effects of timing offset in different shaping filters is studied in the dissertation. It computes the acceptable timing offset in a given BER.3. It discusses the Cramer-Rao Bound in band limited channel. It derives the limitation of the estimation performance of the maximum-likelihood timing synchronization and the effects random data sequence as existing band limited response.4. It computes the performance of several NDA algorithm of timing synchronization in "burst mode" transmission.
