At the present time, the map data of the popular navigational equipments is stored on the hard disk or on the optical disk of the navigators, the PDAs (Person Digital Assistant) and the notebook computers. It will be difficult for the uses to update their map data. The paper proposes a new mobile GPS navigation system based on Java embedded technology. The architecture of this system adopts Client/Sever form.In the design, the map data and the WebGIS server are situated on the remote server side, the user carries a mobile telephone and a bluetooth GPS receiver with himself. When the user wants to locate himself, the mobile telephone gets the user's position coordinate from the blue tooth GPS receiver. Then the telephone will require a navigational operation from the server side and send the position coordinate to the server side by the GPRS network. The server receives and parses the position coordinate. The Web GIS server looks for the map, which shows the actual position of the client side, then sends it to the user. The paper describes the design of the whole mobile navigation system. We put stress on the analysis and design of the client side software. The client side software consists of seven modules, such as basic input-output module, communicating module, parsing module, coordinate conversion module, map module, immediate information module and exigent help module. The paper emphasizes on the design of three of the seven modules, basic input-output module, parsing module and map module. The whole design process went on under the design thought of Object-Orientation. It could ensure the program's robustness, and would raise the program's readability and maintainability. In the end, the test was executed on a PC, with a Java Virtual Machine. The result of the test proved that the expectation function of the existing modules was realized normally. The design aim was finished successfully.
