The CAD technology helps the architecture designers design with computers, but calculation and other processes still rely on reading drawings artificially with low efficiency. This paper introduces the technology of 3D reconstruction of architectural drawings. One of the main and most difficult problems in computer-aided design is to produce automatically a 3D object model from its engineering drawings. 3D reconstruction of architectural drawings includes two steps, one is the recognition of architectural drawings, the other is 3D modeling. A hierarchical and step-forward method is applied to the recognition of architectural drawings. By enabling manual interaction after each step, errors and omits of the automated recognition results can be amended. This not only prevents the errors from spreading out and ensures a better recognition result, but also makes it possible to assume that each step is based on a correct input, thus simplifies the recognition process. The whole recognition process runs from local to global, from graphic elements to components, from the building's skeleton frame to steel bar distribution, and finally establishes the global logical model of the building and makes preparation for budgeting. The 3D information of 2D architectural drawings are distributed and variety. Then some methods are discussed on retrieving information from forms that may be simple or very complicated. Other method is about how to integrate the information distributed in the drawings. When the information has been integrated and the relations between components are rebuilt correctly, the 3D reconstruction of the buildings can be implemented. OpenGL is the most widely adopted 3D graphics API in the industry. By visualizing the resulting 3D model with OpenGL library, one can check the reconstruction result dynamically and interactively, which helps the system designer find potential errors more quickly and accurately. It also gives the user of the system a friendly interface to preview the architectural design, wander in the 3D building model, and survey locations or quantities of various architecture parts.
