Location and edge detection of the target object is crucial in the medical image processing and it is the base of quantitative analysis and aid diagnosis. Based on the technology of digital image processing and recognition, combining with tooth morphologic knowledge, a solution of locating and contour extracting of teeth from the radiography is proposed. This paper analyzes the structure characters of tooth radiograph at first. Then uses the math morphology method to locate the teeth approximately. And plots out a single tooth according to the characters of the tooth and it's surrounding tissues. At last, some edge detecting methods are used to extract the tooth' contour in accordance with the different characters of each edge of this tooth. Proved by many tests, this method is feasible and it is a profitable exploration in extracting the dental contours automatically.
