Facial modeling and animation is one of the difficult research topics in the field of computer graphics. With the development in the application of computer animation technology, movie techniques, electronic games and virtual reality, the research in this field has drawn more and more attention. The paper gives a comprehensive survey and analysis of the existing facial modeling and animation, and describes the methods of current facial modeling and animation. By systematically analyzing relevant algorithms, we present some novel algorithms for facial modeling and animation, such as facial modeling, texture mapping and facial animation. In addition, a prototype system of facial modeling and animation is designed and implemented. The main aspects of work are described below:(1) The idea of constructing facial surface model based on the logic level of the meshes is adopted. The method can provide the user with interactive designing and divide the meshes into smaller ones, especially when the meshes are sparse. The subdivision mesh polygon retains invariance of the bezier curve and shows the details of the facial expressions.(2) A method of texture mapping is proposed, which is based on the division of the facial area. According to the characteristic of face, we divide the facial area into two sections, one is smooth and the other is concavo-convex. We use different methods of texture mapping in different areas, and then implement accurate position mapping by correcting the texture coordinate. In the end, the realistic texture mapping is achieved.(3) The animation driving method for muscles integrating the facial animation parameters of MPEG-4 is proposed, which takes into consideration the characteristics of facial anatomy, histology and biomechanics. A muscle and skin model is established and the action unit adjuster is designed. In accordance with the action unit of the facial action coding system, the classic facial expression animations are generated and the realistic texture mapping is obtained. The method can integrate the facial animation parameters of MPEG-4 into action unit adjuster and get realistic effect easily.(4) A prototype system of facial modeling and animation based on object oriented component is designed and implemented. Based on object-oriented analysis and design, we divide the system into three modules that are interactive designing for 3d facial modeling, texture mapping and facial animation, and develop corresponding components. With these components, the coupling degree between objects is reduced, which makes our system more reusable and transplantable.
