The style of applications based on Internet is increasing rapidly with the development of Internet. And then, many kinds of multimedia real-time application such as IP telephone, video conference, remote education are emerging. Internet Service Providers (ISP) are requested to support End-to-End QoS for these multimedia message. However, it is difficult for current Internet to perform the change between the best-effort transmission and the genuine multi-style service network architecture of supporting End-to-End QoS. So Overlay Network was put forward by researchers to deploy the QoS-sensitive application because of its flexibility and application-level network architecture. On the other hand, many multimedia applications call for the one-to-many or many-to-many transmission (multicast transmission). Therefore it is a practical and theoretical significance task that researches the application-level end-to-end QoS control policy and applies the research achievement for multicast transmission. In this paper, we put forward a Overlay Network DififServ scheme for providing end-to-end QoS based on IP QoS, Overlay QoS and multicast technology according to the demand of application-level multicast transmission. And then an QoS architecture —SHMD was formed, integrating with the Scalable Hybrid Multicast protocol. It can be applied efficiently for hierarchical structure application-level multicast.Excellent end-to-end QoS and differentiate service are provided by Overlay Network DiffServ (ONDS) from the application level. In order to implement this purpose ONDS introduces the conception of Service Pipe, Service Aggregate and utilizes the technologies of Admission Control and Hierarchical Data Source. Its motive is to provide satisfactory end-to-end QoS with making use of the network resource efficiently. It is easy for ONDS to deploy widely on Internet because of its advantages of excellent scalability and eminent flexibility.SHM , integrating application-level multicast with IP multicast, is designed.. SHMD is formed by applying ONDS to SHM. It dissolves the disadvantage of no QoS guarantee in application-level multicast for its inconstancy of background transmission and its complexity of network topology. In this paper, we introduce the theory of Network Calculus and analyze the performance of SHMD using Network Calculus. We also do some simulation experiments on the platform of Network Simulator Version 2.0. The results of analysis...
