Virtual reality (VR) is a very active research filed in recent years, and has achieved a lot of remarkable production in many fields. Surrounded the development of VRP(Virtual Reality Platform) which based on WTK(World Tool Kit), this thesis discusses the composing of VR system and the factors in VR experience, then it focuses the research on VR interaction. Aims at the application of VR in engineering, virtual assembly techniques were studied in the last part of this thesis.At first, the thesis illustrates the conception and characters, introduces the composing of VR system and analyses the factors in VR experience. Through the discussion on the input and output interface of VR system, and with the analysis of the effect of VR experience, it provides references to construct VR system and research on VR technology.VR interaction techniques have been studied in the paper. The thesis summarizes some methods of manipulation and navigation, and discusses measures to improve the efficiency of interaction from the point of cognition. It particularly emphasizes the significance of the navigation awareness, spatial awareness and mental map through the process of traveling.We have developed VRP programmed with WTK and MFC. VRP affords the capability of building VR scenes without programming to the user. It implements various metaphors of manipulation and navigation. Benefit from it, the performance of using mouse to control the 3D scenes has greatly improved. It employs virtual menu and virtual controller which fixed on viewpoint to enrich the interface.In the last part, this thesis researches on virtual assembly. An object- oriented assembly model was presented. The model embodied the top-down design idea, achieved the respective management of assembly architecture information, mate information and parts information. Then it presents the method of representing assembly character and the process of recognition of assembly constrains. Finally, we validated the researches by accomplish the assembly of some parts of a pantograph.
