Research On Applications Of IP Multicast

With the development of Internet, more and more applicationes based on the Internet come up. We will not consent with just reading text of the website, getting multimedia information from Internet is coming into view. IP Multicast has an advantage of saving the bandwidth and reducing the possibility of congestion in the field of transmitting massive multimedia data. So the IP Multicast will be extensively applied in the future.This thesis discusses firstly the IGMP, describes the specification of the protocol and explains the differences between the three different versions of protocol. Then the RPF rule used by the router to forward multicast packets and the multicast forwarding tree are discussed. The process of building SPT and RPT is also illustrated. In this thesis, we also discuss the mechanism of Flooding and Pruning in Dense-Mode multicast routing protocol and the process of switch from RPT to SPT in Sparse-Mode routing protocol. In the final part of this thesis, we explain the Video Conference System developed by JAVA and JMF in detail based on the knowledge we just discussed. In this part, we firstly explained the general function of the system, and then we analyzed the necessary support of hardware and software and the network requirements. At last we explained the software modules at length, such as their functions and the module's procedure of data process, then a test result is given. At the end of the thesis, we discussed the deficiencies of the system and the further work we still need to do.
