The real-time traffic information is the key factor of ITS. At present, microwave radar has been researching and applying in the field of traffic information collection because of its many advantages, such as providing a direct speed measurement at a great accuracy, low cost, insensitive to inclement weather, easy installed and maintenance etc.It is presented in this paper that how to design a traffic data collection system with high performance based on DSP and Microwave radar. It dissertates the operational principle of microwave radar and MUSIC algorithm, hardware design and software design of the system in details. With regard to hardware design, the paper details the design of amplifying circuit of Doppler signal, circuit of every subsystem and the connection between CPLD and other components. Furthermore, it discusses the special notice of installing the radar. On part software design, it introduces the principle of MUSIC algorithm and gives the flow chart of every programmable part.We got the experimental results by using emulation based on Matlab, CCS and TMS320VC5402. According to the experimental results, we concluded that the error rate is very low and the system can meet the practical application demand. At last, we suggest using sensor combinations to get more comprehensive traffic data.
