| Recently, as the rapid development of Web technology, the amount of data transformed and interchanged with XML format is rising. Wide use of XML has produced many new problems, and also has created opportunities in the field of information retrieval. So W3C published a brand new query language for XML—XQuery, firstly on February 15th of 2001, which has been being revised since then. The latest draft is XQueryl.O published on April 4th, 2005. Thanks to its well-designed framework and powerful functions, XQuery may meet the need of retrieval on XML data souce. The appearance of XQuery aroused much interest of many researchers concerned, so studies on it has become one of heated issues. In this thesis, the base knowledge of XQuery, including XML and its features of querying, resources, fracture and functions of XQuery, is talked about at first. Then the author analyzed and discussed the main issues on XQuery, such as XQuery expressions, the realization of complicated functions of XQuery, querying optimization, and so on. In the end of the article, some examples are listed in order to show the use of XQuery.
