In the open digital information services situations, the Subject Information Gateway (SBIG) addresses himself to integration of the information resource of the particular subject area, tools and services and providing for the user a convenient entrance to information retrieval and service. When the Internet gets together the different types of SBIG which exists in different country and set up by different organization , the importance of interoperability show increasingly. The interoperability of SBIG means the capacity of exchanging and sharing the file, search and services. The aims of the interoperability are to shield the differences between distributed and heterogeneous SBIGS and provide an unified entrance to services of cross-browsing and cross-searching, make the rich information resources be fully used. It is generally agreed that the way forward for SBIG is increased interoperability. The dissertation consists of 4 parts .The first part expatiates on the basic question of the interoperability of the SBIG, include the conception and character; the difference between SBIG and Search engine, Digital library; the development forms and the overall framework. The second part generalizes and analyses the key factors which influence the interoperability: metadata formats, the related protocols, knowledge organization systems, etc. This part also analyses the criteria for interoperability. The third part generalizes the interoperability patterns : Hyperlink pattern and integrated pattern, cites an abundance of instances. And then summarizes the current major research projects, points out the existing questions and future development trends. The last part constructs a model of the interoperability based on OAI /XML...
