In modern Computer Aided Design system, feature-based modeling technology isonly used to single part, however, the technology would cause low efficiently modelingand blur a definite engineering meaning of an inter-part feature of part as dealing withsome typical joint (e. g. ,blot ,pin, etc). By the aid of 3D Design Software Packages and Tool Set for Industrial TypicalProducts of National 863 Project. Our workgroup gives a research on Computer AidedFixture Design System. As an essential part of the project, several contents arediscussed in this subject. Through studying internal inter-part character, partial modification and assemblyrelation of the joint, the paper extends the feature-based modeling oriented to part to aninter-part feature-based modeling oriented to assembly. It can express automatic localmodification to the model of assembly objects. At the same time, a methoddetermining part moving position and orientation according to reference origin andboundary face of mating feature is studied, which could complete the joint assemblyautomatically. Based on the above results,a module for rapid assembly of fixture design isdeveloped in CAXA, which could decrease the input data used in the assembly, andsimplify the process of modeling and assembly, the module would improves theefficiency of fixture design evidently.
