Study On Collection Space Of Library In Digital Age

In digital age, the boom of digital resources and digital library is changing our habit ofusing traditional library,functions of library, and influencing collection structure andcollection space accordingly. The essential of study on collection space in digital age focuseson how to take advantages of characteristics of digital environment to resolve the problem ofcollection space's shortage. The major research work and contributions of this paper are as follows: to clarify the concept of collection, based on which give a scientific definition of collection space and exploit its extension ; to conclude four direct factors that determine the size of collection space in square meters: the number of collection,specifications of shelf,contents and types of shelving and the layout of collection space and management models; primarily from the aspect of digital environment's influence to two major conflicts that result in the tension of collection space, to analyze how digital environment work on collection space. to develop the methods system to collection space problem in the area combining two major fields——collection management and collection space; considering characteristic of digital age, to put forward three kinds of collection models : electronic resources mostly,print resources mostly,electronic resources and print resources equivalently, and then propose corresponding strategies to different collection models.
