Remote sensing images play an increasingly important role in national economy and military affairs. How to store and transfer remote sensing images effectively with image compression technology is of grate practical significance. The key to put remote sensing image compression technique into practical use is to select a high performance real-time coding algorithm which is low in memory and complexity. The system structure and key technologies of embedded image coding algorithm based on wavelet transform are fully studied, and its application in remote sensing image compression is discussed through analyzing the characteristics of remote sensing images. Based on the algorithm above, the region of interest coding algorithm on bit-plane shift is then discussed, which can maintain most important information of images in the circumstances of low bit rate. A lossless and near-lossless coding algorithm with space dimension independent is presented finally, according to the theory of interference multi-spectral image. The experimental results show that it has not only low complexity, but also high ability against errors.
