Computer aided surgical planning and navigation enhances neurosurgery with improved precision and minimized invasion. It is becoming one of the routine neurosurgery methods in some developed countries. Recently, various stereotactic frames were used in some domestic hospitals for neurosurgery, but it can't be popularized because of lacking support from the corresponding software. So, it is necessary to develop a program that aids doctors to plan and execute their stereotactic neurosurgery.Firstly, not only the feature of computer aided stereotactic surgery was analyzed, but also the requirement of software and hardware in computer aided stereotactic surgery system was summarized. At the same time, the functions of the system software was analyzed and defined in detail. Secondly, VC and VTK were chosen as the developing platform for a good efficiency in both development and run-time phases. Then, according to the function definition, the system was divided into three types of modules as display class, control class and data management class. A model of the software framework was put forward too. After that, design methods of primary modules of the framework were studied and presented. Furthermore, the key techniques of the computer aided stereotactic surgery system were studied thoroughly. Finally, the implementation of the system software and the registration test program were presented. Basic functions, such as DICOM disposing, 2D image processing, image segmentation, 3D reconstruction, measurement and surgical planning etc., can be finished with the system software.
